WHMIS 2015 divides hazardous products into two major hazard groups: physical hazards and health hazards. These two groups are further divided into hazard classes, which group together products with similar properties.

WHMIS 2015 applies to two major groups of hazards: physical, and health. Each hazard group includes hazard classes that have specific hazardous properties. – Physical hazards group: based on the physical or chemical properties of the product - such as flammability, reactivity, or corrosivity to metals.

Hazardous products are divided into two hazard groups: physical hazards and health hazards. The two hazard groups are further divided into hazard classes.

GHS uses three hazard classes: Health Hazards, Physical Hazards and Environmental Hazards.

Category 1 is always the greatest level of hazard (that is, it is the most hazardous within that class). If Category 1 is further divided, Category 1A within the same hazard class is a greater hazard than category 1B. Category 2 within the same hazard class is more hazardous than category 3, and so on.

Hazard Classes

Within each group, there are classes which are essentially groupings of like chemicals. There are 19 classes of chemicals within the physical hazards group and 12 classes of chemicals within the health hazard group.

OSHA has updated the requirements for labeling of hazardous chemicals under its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). All labels are required to have pictograms, a signal word, hazard and precautionary statements, the product identifier, and supplier identification.
